Jashodaben Narendra Modi’s Ordeal: Celibacy as Hidnutva da Vinci code
True to its nature of a secretive and conspiratorial organization, the RSS has an arsenal of non conventional warfare weapons. Narendra Modi, chief minister of Haryana Mohan Lal Khattar and a host of others were leaders of various RSS function groups and were kept in the shadow and suddenly inducted into politics and chosen as chief ministers. Khattar is still a bachelor. Modi remained so for more than a decade of secrecy that shrouded him as Chief Minister of Gujarat until the election injunction of marital status information in 2014 brought to fore the fact that he was married. Willy-nilly he had to fill up his nomination form and that is how the cat came out of the bag. In Shakespearean obscenity it became apparent that he had a cod piece in his hose.
Modi took shelter in the RSS headquarters in Ahmadabad after three months of conjugal life although his wife had lived with him in his house for three years. The father in law of Jashodaben told her to do her matriculation and acquire a teaching certificate and then take a job. As a faithful wife and an obedient daughter in law she carried out the instructions well for all the rest of her life and then retired and returned to her brother’s house Unjha, Mehsana. During her teaching life she lived in a room that did not have a bathroom and so she would wash herself behind the bushes at the door yard around. After Modi became the chief minister a ring of guards watched her day and night and prevented reporters from meeting her. They chased out anyone who pried into her private life. Her students were also Muslims in large number. She taught them quite well and had photographed herself along with parents who also wore the white round caps that traditionally Muslims wear. Her husband did not wear that cap to oblige any Muslim for any social function or courtesy. All this he did to prepare himself to be a leader (pracharak) from the RSS to be inducted into politics.
The intelligence agencies took upon themselves the task of providing Jashodaben security after Modi became the Prime Minister of the country. The police had not bothered for more than twelve years when he was the chief minister. There is no official record that Modi ordered either. As in most cases in pogroms or favouring pliant officers and punishing as revenge those who refused to toe his line of action he made no records. The records were destroyed after dilly dallying when asked to furnish them. Such cases run into thousands as he had ruled his state the way he liked and not the way the constitution of India required. Of course, he did not do his rajdharm even after being advised by no other than the PM AB Vajpayee or remonstrance of President KR Narayanan. After becoming PM and having achieved detente with President Barak Obama even records don’t count much.
However, the hamartia or tragic flaw came from his domestic and private life. As it usually happens in a Greek tragedy. Jashodaben through RTI act asked about the security given to her. Her misgivings are a disaster for Modi in the words of his predecessor, Dr Manmohan Singh. Of course, Singh had warned that he would be a disaster for the country if elected. But the disaster is turning upon him as natural justice. Jashodaben wrote to the superintendent of police on November 24, 2014: “India’s Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was attacked and killed by her personal bodyguards, because of which we are very afraid of our bodyguards. So we want the complete information on the guards protecting us, and if they have a copy of the order under which they are deployed here. If they don’t have it, then on whose orders they don’t have it. We need a certified copy of that order with all these details”.
Her instinct for apprehension of security of her own life is based on what the wives of Haren Pandya and Sanjiv Bhatt felt for the lives of their husbands. Or what Samir Khan Pathan’s mother felt or what Kauser Bil felt when the Gujarat police snatched Sohrabuddin Shaikh from her arms as she tried to save her husband in a true Indian culture. She would better die than give up her husband. Or what Mujahid Saleem’s relatives felt when Narender Amin of Gujarat police shot and killed the youth well within the police station of Hyderabad. Like what Qateel Siddiquy’s wife felt in what was going to happen to her husband imprisoned in the Dagduseth Halwai temple attack in Pune coinciding with German Bakery bombing February 13, 2012. There are innumerable other such cases.
What is in the ethos of the rule of Modi in Gujarat that Bhatt’s wife was scared when she heard that her husband would be kept in the Gaikwad Haveli which houses the Crime Branch where DG Vanzara was in charge? After all Bhatt was in charge of state intelligence and also in charge of the security among other so many things, the security of the chief minister himself. Similarly why should Haren Pandya’s wife after failing to get any comfort from LK Advani about the murder of her husband travel to Visakhapatnam jail to meet the so called dreaded terrorists Asghar Ali who was found to be innocent and yet had spent nearly a decade in jail on false charges of killing Haren Pandya?
Shakespeare’s character Polonius has the answer: by indirection find the direction out.
Vinita Kamte, wife of Ashok Kamte who was killed along with Hemant Karkare, says: : “There was a time when I was so desperate for the truth [regarding who really killed Karkare and Kamte and Salaskar on 28/11]that I felt that I should go and meet Kasab and ask him what happened? Can you imagine my situation—should I feel the need to ask a terrorist what happened that night—do you feel the situation has changed! I felt it was important to speak one’s mind. I just thought we would expose the system and people would take it forward. I still feel that people must ask questions and hold those in power responsible.” [1]
If Vinita failed to get straight answer from Rakesh Maria of Crime Branch at the time of 26/11, can Jashodaben get it from the superintendant of police of her district?
Again the puzzle is in the da Vince code. Ashok Singhal, the VHP boss, said that the Pope and the Vatican wanted to hunt and kill Mary Magdalene wife of Christ. He found that the Italian born Catholic Sonia Gandhi and the police were also doing the same in hunting Sadhvi PragyasinghThakur and other Hindutva leaders. Jashodaben for all intent and purposes is an honest woman. She is not tainted with Hindutva and that is why she is in such a critical situation, in a tormenting lurch. In contrast her husband was neither a bachelor nor innocent like Christ.
There are two instances of telltale one is Modi’s dehydration when Karan Thappar interviewed him and his order to snoop a beautiful woman during her trip to Bangalore hospital. Modi is also an extremist nationalist party member as Parnell of Irish nationalist party was. His affair with Kitty O’Shea led to his downfall and disgrace. Modi has still not broken his code. When a journalist, Heena Deshpande, tried to do so years ago, she was threatened. [2] Modi has his pack including Ram Dev whose ashram in the Himalaya sheltered Jashodaben prior to the 2014 election. At whose behest was it done? [3]

Hindutva & its ramifications
Hindutva is a continuous struggle especially against Muslim minority. It engages the Muslim through acts of belligerence calculated and focused on its object of obliterating or submerging the minority into Hindu fold. The main force behind the Hindutva is the hate ideology of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh also known as RSS. The organization of extremist Hindus did not take part in the struggle for freedom of India. Instead it instructed its cadres to save their energy for mounting a juggernaut against the Muslim after independence in 1947.
Gujarat came under the sway of Hindutva thanks to pracharak Narendra Modi when he assumed the office of the chief minister of the state. In the later phase of his stewardship of the state he was accused of ordering the fake encountering of Ishrat Jahan and three others and many more such fake encounters. He was directly linked to the murders because he was the white bearded that had conveyed the order through the black beard. The context makes it simple. A police officer GL Singhal did not want to shoot and kill Ishrat Jahan so the matter was referred to the chief of anti terrorism squad of the state, DG Vanzara. He rung up his superiors and cleared it saying that the order had come from the chief minister who was also the home minister and his assistant minister for home Amit Shah. For seven years the case dragged in courts because Modi had justified the murder and it was his state policy as Vanzara claimed it. The police were carrying it out and Modi was brazenly justifying it at election rallies.
In another case more than ten years passed and the Supreme Court on November 5, 2014 rubbished the state government’s appeal for revision of the judgment on Akshardham temple attack of September 2002“Instead of booking the real culprits responsible for taking so many precious lives, the police caught innocent people and got imposed the grievous charges against them.”[ 1] Six innocent Muslims were framed in bogus charges of terrorist acts. Strangely enough they were given options to be framed either in Godhra railway fire accident, Haren Pandya assassination or Akshardham attack. Those falsely blamed for Pandya killing and Akshardham were Muslims. So the real culprits behind crimes could not be Muslims and logical inference is that even the Godhra incident was not a terrorist attack but was made to appear ‘Islamic terrorism’. Modi had used precisely that term in the case of 9/11 in the televised debate two days after 9/11. It was a universal fact that that Muslims turn to terrorism because of their faith and scripture was what he tried to convey steam rolling the interruption of the anchor Rajdeep Sardesai and others. This leads to a strong suspicion that the Hindutva terrorists were very much active even then in their strategy to mount terrorist attacks the blames for which would be laid at the door of the Muslim community and that would lead to their massacre. Given the history of VD Savarkar’s record of complicity in mounting terrorist attacks during the British rule and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi this is not farfetched truth.
The continuous struggle against Muslims can throw up very bizarre reasoning which is true of a community but at the cost of the Muslims. When Najma Heptulla was appointed as minister for minorities in May 2014 she remarked that Muslims are so many in numbers that they cannot be called minority and ought not to demand reservation or concessions. She compared them with the Parsis who face existential problems. Within six months her ministry created huge fund to increase the population of Parsis by floating a scheme called Jiyo Parsi: “Our institutions are gifts from our ancestors. They’ve shielded us, nurtured us and been backdrop to our way of life. But if we don’t all marry early and produce plenty of babies these colonies are going to be empty. Till other people move in it. Think about it. Then address the issue. Should you face fertility obstacles Jiyo Parsi is a 100 million rupee initiative to increase the number of the community, by the Ministry of Minorities Affairs in association with Parzor. Keep our Parsi colonies, Parsi. Get IVF assistance up to 5 lakh.” The banner of the ad is even more catchy: “If you don’t get married and have kids, this area will have a new name in your lifetime.”[2]
In contrast there has been no such scheme designed to protect the life of Muslims who are frequently killed in riots and violence of all kinds including pogroms and genocide. There is no adequate help for families of the Muslims who have lost their life or lost their houses in riots and pogroms. Modi government refused to pay stipends to Muslims boys and girls for education as recommended by Sachar Commission. All this gives rise to the widespread belief that the life of a Muslim is not equal to that of a Parsis or a Hindu. Modi government allowed the evacuation of a Parsi family consisting of Rupa Mody and her daughter from the besieged house of Ahsan Jafri while the former Member of Parliament’s plea to Modi and Sonia Gandhi to save the life of all who had sought refuge in his house fell on deaf ears. All these evidence show how Hindutva cannot brook the existence of Muslim in the society. They cannot watch the Navratri dance even from the periphery of the crowd let alone participate in it. In this sense of “inheritance of loss” by the Muslim community ‘the 2014 election has really changed India’ for the minority.
Hindutva is a political philosophy rather than a theology. In his book Saha Sonary Paney [Six Golden Leaves]Savarkar says that Hindus must shed inhibition and feel proud about being Hindus. Therefore he calls reviling of Hinduism as inimical to Hinduism. The first example of it is from Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar whom he calls deranged by hatred against Hindus, and, then quotes him “The Hindus’ has been a life of continuous defeat. It is a mode of survival of which every Hindu will feel ashamed.” To counter this, Savarkar illustrates the bravery of the Hindus saying that for fifty years before Mohammad bin Qasim, Muslim rulers had attacked Sindh. Hindu rulers had repulsed them and in one such attack by the governor of Oman the Hindu king called Chacha had killed the commander Abdul Aziz. [3]So where is shame as it is not continuous defeat of Hindus. It is this kind of exhortation of Savarkar that Hindutva groups in the first decade of 21st century took up the slogan Garve sai kaho hum hindun hain “Say with pride that we are Hindus.”
In the pogroms of Muslims by Hindutva a good deal of the enthusing by Savarkar went in the raping and killing of Muslim women and girls. As Babu Bajrangi proudly claims that he and his horde felt like Rana Pratap when they were perpetrating manslaughter. He claims in the sting operation tapes with Tehelka that even those eating rice and pulse [Hindus] could do that, namely rape and kill Muslim women and girls. [4]Modi took a cue from this when he praised the Chharra community in the late evening of February 28, 2002 that their mothers had given birth to brave males. The chief minister even went further and instructed them not to slacken their murder and mayhem on the following two more days given them to finish the genocide
After twelve years of investigation Justice Nanavati saw no such abysmal level of barbarity in what is ascribed to Narendra Modi. By the by, it was Justice Akshay Mehta (the other member of the inquiry commission) who had sanctioned bail to Babu Bajrangi. Later Bajrangi was re-arrested and tried and sentenced to long imprisonment. This proves that Modi not only played an active role but also the chain of command principle implies his complicity in the genocide.
The above statement of Ambedkar is in a context of simmering anger and persistent conflict between the Brahamanical order and the suppression and oppression of Dalits. It has always been there since time immemorial. Lord Ram had cut the hands of a Dalit youth and then beheaded him. Shambuk’s sin was that he had learned the art of playing flute and practiced it in open defiance of this being forbidden to the down trodden is an instance of it.[5] If the fine art of singing which does not involving physical contact with other human beings, is not allowed what about love! In The God of Small Things Arundhati Roy presented Velutha a lower caste Christian Dalit who has been giving small pleasure to high caste Christian Ammu. But he went further and consummated his love for which he was brutally killed. The outrage resulted in far reaching consequences. His father had been given an artificial eye by the patrician family of Ammu. On hearing about the escapade he plucked the eye out and returned it to the landlord and offered to hunt and kill his own son. Such is the oppression of the lower caste and how they are resigned to their fate. The shame and defeat that stung so much to Savarkar would pale into insignificance if the atrocities on Muslims and Dalits in recent times are put in contrast. There was ‘god of small things’ who lived and loved his beloved until he was lynched along with his parents in Ahmadnagar district. The saga of suffering wiped out the two generation without any one to mourn for them as Sanjay Jadhav (42), his wife Jayashree (38) and their teenage son Sunil (19) were murdered after midnight on October 21, 2014 in the village of Javkhede Khalasa-Kasarwadi in Pathardi Taluk in Ahmadnagar district of Maharashtra. The Jadhavadi is a scattered hamlet of the downtrodden. The mutilated torso of the youth recovered from the well nearby shows how the killers must have tortured him by mutilating the sex parts. His affair with an upper caste married woman caused the tragedy though the adultery of the woman went unnoticed. The hushed up affair made the woman anonymous and even the family name did not appear in the reports. But the fate of the boy and his parents is highlighted because they crossed the forbidden line that divides the families. So the honour killing that triggered the pogroms in Muzaffarnagar finally resurfaced in Maharashtra. There was another anti Dalit killing in January 2013 when in a village called Sonai three members of the community were killed and their bodies throw in a septic tank. They were sweepers. Then there was also the case of people beating a Dalit youth to death in the same area.[6]
Whose pride and shame is this?
It is history that pogroms 2002 in Gujarat started not with the burning of the Sabarmati Express; it was merely the pretext that Hindutva groups invented. The real flash point was that the Hindu karsevaks had molested a Muslim girl Sophia at the platform. They attempted to abduct her when they carried her towards their compartment. In the meantime, Muslims who saw it tried to intervene to save her, not for their honour but for decency. The resultant stoning of the compartment may be just on that account. That the extremist Hindus also manhandled Muslim vendors was precursor. Even the language the people used in the tussle was common, Gujarati. It was made into a flashpoint much later. The hallmark of the conflagration was Hindutva.
The overall effect of the continuous struggle was and is to establish a Hindu rashtra or nation. In this they wanted to coopt the Dalits so that they could kill two birds with a single stone. The nation they envisage is one where there is no minority and the lower castes would be assigned to do what they have been forced to do down the ages of history. Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar put it this way: “The ultimate vision of our work … is a perfectly organised state of society wherein each individual has been moulded into a model of ideal Hindu manhood and made into a living limb of the corporate personality of society.”(We) This is nation building in official RSS language.
It acquired a new strategy in the last decade and half. First the Dalits were pitted against the Muslims during 2002 pogroms and then came the reward of BJP winning strength in Gujarat election. Ashok Singhal of VHP preened on the successful result. He said that it would be replicated all over the country. It was. Muzaffarnagar, Assam and Trilokpuri followed in succession. Bal Thackeray claimed that it was he and his cadres who had shown the way to Modi drawing on the memory of early eighties and nineties of the previous century. Such was the triumvirate of Hindutva.

Unraveling the mystery of the white beard, the black beard and the bespectacled clean shaved
Unraveling the mystery of the white beard, the black beard and the bespectacled clean shaved
An interviewer asked Amit Shah:
“What is the mystery behind your strong relationship with Modi?
“That is your job to find out.
“The relationship between me and the prime minister is as normal as it should be. There is no mystery between us.”[1]
No one has bothered to unearth it because the wind of victory has swept like a whirlpool. When the dust settles down it would naturally make the terrain that Amit Shah and Narendra Modi have traversed clear. Modi did prevent the truth of the carnage from full exposure. If he threatened the journalists with the fate of Daniel Pearl his hoodlums also stopped Rajdeep Sardesai to pass the test: “I was asked to remove my trousers to prove whether I was a Hindu or Muslim.” [2]The chief minister was not so naïve because he was already much more experienced and therefore Sardesai is not straightforward when he asserts: “I’ve realised it was the Vishwa Hindu Parishad who was in control of Gujarat in 2002. Modi had been in power for only four-five months. I don’t think he had a hold over administration that he should’ve had. That I believe is something I have understood over these years.”
How could such a senior journalist say this half truth? Sardesai was the anchor when Modi debated ‘Islamic terrorism’ with Dr Rafiq Zikaria and others a couple of days after 9/11. Ashish Nandi’s observation regarding Modi is also of the same circa. “It left me in no doubt that here was a classic, clinical case of a fascist. I never use the term ‘fascist’ as a term of abuse; to me it is a diagnostic category comprising not only one’s ideological posture but also the personality traits and motivational patterns contextualising the ideology.
“Modi, it gives me no pleasure to tell the readers, met virtually all the criteria that psychiatrists, psycho-analysts and psychologists had set up after years of empirical work on the authoritarian personality. He had the same mix of puritanical rigidity, narrowing of emotional life, massive use of the ego defence of projection, denial and fear of his own passions combined with fantasies of violence—all set within the matrix of clear paranoid and obsessive personality traits. I still remember the cool, measured tone in which he elaborated a theory of cosmic conspiracy against India that painted every Muslim as a suspected traitor and a potential terrorist”. [3]
Modi has since grayed and as a white bearded man he has also acquired the sobriquet ‘safed dadi’in his bureaucratic set up and his junior MoS for home Amit Shah is black bearded. Sardesai’s first book 2014:The Election That Changed India cannot change the fact that Modi was and still is the demagogue and his demagoguery has acquired more finesse over the years. He has held his tongue after becoming PM lest the truth would be out in his words if he speaks more of 2002 pogroms and the fake encounters he often justified even criminally. Hence the proverbial truth: “The speck in the beard shows up who has stolen.” chor ki dadi meyn tinka. He has been dehydrated once [2007 interview by Karan Thapar] over the mass killings, a tip of the ice berg being exposed on the screen. Another metaphor is the little hand of Lady Macbeth which the perfumes of Arabia cannot sweeten.
What Modi unleashed in Gujarat 2002 to win the election he replicated in Muzaffarnagar and therefore he did not channel negativism to positivism as Sardesai says: “In normal times we would’ve thought Modi is a polarising figure and dividing people, etc. In fact L K Advani was apparently telling the BJP this, don’t make Modi a PM candidate because that’ll polarise Hindus and Muslims. But actually, in the times we were living in, Modi became a unifier. You know, Modi stands for governance, the same person who stood for polarising elections was now being projected as a governance icon and it worked because there was this anger.” The most cogent fact that militates against this is the track record of the new PM in office. He won the election on May 16, 2014 when the Supreme Court also acquitted six people who were imprisoned for 11 years on the false charges that they had taken part in the attack on Akshardham temple. Even prior to the election his lieutenant Shah exhorted the Jats to take revenge for their honour, hence an innuendo of ‘honor killing.’ Adding the tag ‘in the polls’, would be fig leaf that cannot hide the subject matter.
Modi had succeeded in polarizing in Gujarat which his lieutenant continued in Muzaffarnagar 2013. This does not diminish the fact that PraveenTogadia was very active and thereby it implies that VHP was behind the genocide. But it is equally true that it was Jaideep Patel, VHP boss in Ahmadabad to whom Modi personally had given charge of the dead bodies of the Hindu karsevaks killed at Godhra. Modi also joined the strike called by VHP. If anyone says that it was a government officer at the railway station who handed over the corpses it is still challengeable how he could do so and why did not Modi prevent it. The act of omission in preventing genocide was complicity in itself. Modi as well as Togadia were actively engaged. The chief minister toured Naroda Patiya and encouraged the mass murderers to continue their action with vigour and not slacken in their work. This is active complicity. Any court anywhere in the world would have taken the sting operation of Tehelka to its logical end. The Charra community members averred that Modi did encourage them. The RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal and other saffron affiliates are multi headed Hydra and have participated in the genocide equally. VHP chief Ashok Singhal often taunted that post Godhra violence would be replicated elsewhere in India. It was.
Sardesai praises Modi for delegating power to the young which he calls empowering the youth. But he forgets that Modi also delegated power to Amit Shah in the most serious situation of liquidating people in the fake encounters for the obvious reason that he was shrewd enough to know that chain of command principle in court would throw him in prison. For example it was the black bearded Shah who told DG Vanzara to take away Kauser Bi along with her husband when the bus was stopped near Sangli. She had thrown her arms to prevent the police from snatching her husband Sohrabuddin. This fake encounter case is one of the two in which Shah is charge sheeted. He also played equally serious criminal role in eliminating the only eye witness of the murder of Sohrabuddin, Tulsiram Prajapati. When Sanjiv Bhatt senior officer in charge of intelligence and security of even Modi confronted Shah with truth he became nervous and started fidgeting.
Such serious charges as conspiracy, extortion, kidnapping, murder and destroying evidence are leveled against Shah. It lowered the moral standard as AAP believes but it is also a tactic that Modi and Shah would brazen it out by veneering the crimes against humanity with focusing exclusively on development and good governance.[4] That has paid off dividends in the polls but the judiciary has still to decide hundreds of cases.
One way to skirt it was what I wrote in my book Narendra Modi and his pack, the terror streak (2013): “The Sangh [RSS] chose Modi to fight ten years later because his charisma was so enchanting that the Hindutva group felt that by winning the election they would get another clean chit for what had happened then. Thousands of cases are still pending in Gujarat or in the Supreme Court or in Bombay high court. By having Modi at the helms of affair of the country only he could sweep all the cases under the carpet of the mania for development.”[Chapter 1]
The man with real record of attempting to shield Modi is the clean shaved Arun Jaitley. He has even written letters to Prime Minister when Modi was most vulnerable. He wove such legal arguments with great pains and drawing on his legal acumen that the genocide cases have been either prolonged or the recommendations of the amicus curiae have not been followed up. It is understatement that “Despite being party president, Shah remains chargesheeted in two cases of murder on which he is said to be informally advised by Jaitley.” [5] There has been a whole battery of legal experts employed to tackle the numerous cases including such ones as Tushar Mehta (Advocate General), S Gurumuthy, S Ram, Ram Jethmalani, etc. Shah served time in prison and was given bail plus freedom to canvas even when he was involved in murders and was capable of destroying evidence and obstructing justice from outside his state as well. More than a dozen police officers accused in serious charges are now reinstated in their posts are most probably doing what is logically possible, saving their necks as well as their seniors and political bosses. Modi was so agitated at times that he would let truth slip out of his tighter control over cover up. He was attending a grand function of inauguration of the Police University when he abruptly left the function and went in a huddle. Jaitley had 400 journalists dine with him. He had contacts with many more. If media played a major role in the victory it is balanced by the saffrom groups. No one would like him or his leader come to any harm. Are there still enough independent free lance journalists to reveal the mystery?

Burdwan conundrum: Modi checkmating Mamta and marginalizing Muslims
The witch hunt mounted over the Burdwan blasts is willful pursuit of inanity. The PM and his bête noire Congress party were and still are a captive of the chasing the chimera. It is because the whole investigation system is skewed. It has sworn to go after the Muslims no matter what is the reality on ground. The classic case is Malegaon 2006 blasts in which the ATS and CBI along with their cohorts in the local police summoned the police informers from the City Police Station neighbourhood Central talkies Idgah) notorious for brothels, gambling dens and sundry illegal practices. They asked them to sign blank papers accusing Shabbir Masiullah of stocking RDX. The cops collected the soil from the workshop which they alleged contained traces of RDX. On this pretext nine accused in the case languished in jail for more than five years until NIA officer Pramod Mane came on the scene. He reportedly questioned the witness and found that they were ordered to do what the police wanted. They had not been there at the workshop and had not seen anything. It was this that proved that blaming innocent Muslims was the game the police and hence the state and centre home ministries were playing in politics. For more than a fortnight before the blasts Shabbir Masiulllah was in jail. The police did not bother to keep watch on the work shop let alone preempt the bomb attack. Where police play such proactive role in terrorism what can one hope of fairness? It bears upon Burdwan blasts. The record of sale of improvised explosives would have shown the clientele of the accused. If they were manufacturing explosives and selling, the sleuths could then obtain the record of the clients using the services of the accused that could tell the truth to the world. If the accused were really making bombs even improvised ones there must be some record of their past deeds. Business like this cannot be said to be limited to any community. Unlike the Nanded blasts of 2006 where the RSS workers were assembling bombs for use the next day in Aurangabad, Burdwan must have some past history. Or else it is a clandestine illegal business of improvised explosives used for mining or any industrial purposes. That they were supplying for use against Shaikh Hasina government is fairy tale.
But the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has had a brief of giving ultimatum to chief minister Mamta Banerjee now under duress since Modi administration has its own agenda of fighting terror a la US like Vajpayee administration was doing earlier in the beginning of the previous decade when it banned Students Islamic Movement of India despite nil or zero record of terror of the much maligned organization of Muslims. There is further parallel. After the arrest of Zabiuddin Ansari aka Abu Jundal the Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar refused to take his custody though he was under pressure from the Delhi police. Zabi was arrested for links with the Darbhanga module. The chief minister refused to buy this theory and remained firm. Modi had threatened to punish him for his betrayal as Kumar had broken the alliance with BJP. Bomb blasts which followed surprised everyone as Bihar had had no such attacks before. This is how the nefarious theory of the US began to have its effect in India: either you are with us in our ‘war on terror’ or you are against us and are allied to the ‘terrorists.’ This is not improbable as Zabi was a police informer and police informers have played leading role in causing blasts and in conspiracy leading to it. So the logical inference that TMC must fight terrorism the way BJP government wants.
Doval’s predecessor MK Narayanan had succeeded in stymieing the investigation of Haryana police which was on the verge of arresting Hindutva terrorists behind the Samjhauta Express attack on February 18, 2007. He said it was in the interest of the country. So another inference: he who pays the piper calls the tune. The Home Ministers of Maharashtra RR Patil and central government HM Shivraj Patil have played havoc in the so called ‘war on terror’ but no “tough message” was served to the respective governments. [1]
So why is Prime Minister Narendra Modi picking on Mamata?
In contrast to West Bengal, Gujarat has had too many teeming issues of terrorism sub rosa. There were two Gujarat state guest houses at Mt Abu and Jaipur which prominently figured along with the Dangs ashram of Swami Asimanand. The second most important leader of RSS Indresh Kumar was present in the Gujarat samaj guest house of Jaipur where the conspiracy to bomb Malegaon was hatched. Again inquiry was stalled because of far reaching ramification. Lt Col Prasad Purohit had suspected that Indresh Kumar had given his name and that of Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur to police for their involvement in bomb blasts in Malegaon 2008. [2] Kumar was also accused of mentoring and financing Malegaon and Samjhauta Express blasts.[3] Similar meetings were also held in Dangs ashram in Gujarat. Why did not any one send “tough message” to Modi who was chief minister. One chief minister is as good or bad as another in fighting terrorism. Are the 37 audio and three video clips recovered from Dyanand Pandy’s lap top not enough of corroborating evidence against Purohit, Indresh Kumar and a host or others? They clearly show that Asimanand, Pandy, Purohit and others knew each other well and what is even more damning knew what they were up to in regards to the bomb attacks of past and future. Others included in the contexts are Ramchandra Kalsangra, Sandeep Dange and Sunil Joshi and like Asminand they absconded and have not been so far traced though Asamanand was. Joshi was killed in the end of 2007. In his own confession Asimanand says unmistakably that Mohan Bhagwat was doing the same work that Asimanand wanted extremist Hindus to do: blow bombs to kill Muslims. Since then Bhagwat has risen to the top post of RSS, Neither he nor his RSS is termed terrorist! This despite the fact that 4 of the five cell phones used by the terrorists were traced to RSS paracharaks, Dange ( district pracharak of RSS in Shajapur MP) and ChandraKant Leve ( contact man of the same district for RSS).
Burdwan phenomenon is not anything but a political move against Mamta Banerjee who has been broadminded and shown concern for Muslim problems including Nandigram atrocities on Muslims. Tata left the special economic zone and was warmly welcomed by Modi in a tit for tat.
RSS ideology is against the third front or regional parties. In its vision of Akhand Bharat the third front is a serious challenge because its neutrality in dealing with Muslims and the appeasement of the minority is a political stunt that is always bandied to and fro between the Congress and BJP for their bipartisan considerations.
Mamta Bajerjee is one of the invitees of Imam Bukhari for this reason. She has also rubbished the claim made by NIA and the BJP regarding the Burdwan case. She has refused to play into the hands of Modi although she is ready for thorough inquiry into the blasts and the consequences. As chief minister of Gujarat Modi had been playing terror politics. He used the Sohrabuddin fake encounter and not only justified the killing but also dared to the central government to prosecute him. There was hardly a month for the last twelve years when he did not do something or the other to either punish fair minded police officers or antagonize the Muslim community. Since becoming PM of India Modi has not only allowed Bhagwat to use the Doordarshan channel but also justified it and praised Bhagwat. Viwing Bhagwat in the light of the disclosure of his involvement in terror Modi has dared to do what Pakistan has done when it allowed Maulana Masood Azhar address the police and army. Expecting Muslim to stomach all this is asking for the impossible. It is here that the Imam Bukhari invitation to Nawaz Sharif but not Modi comes in the picture. "People voted for Modi for development, employment opportunities, controlling inflation and inclusiveness. But his conduct since taking over has been unbecoming of a PM. He has indulged in divisive politics and had not controlled hate mongering." Bukhari goes on "Modi claims to be the prime minister of 125 crore Indians but conveniently and deliberately avoids addressing Muslims. He has shown he doesn't like us. He is the one who has been maintaining distance from the community. So, I too chose to maintain my distance." Even the most sycophantic Muslim clerics who tried to offer him to wear the round white skull cap could not succeed in reaching him. He has adamantly withheld the scholarship sanctioned to Muslims under Sachar Commission recommendation. He even dismissed the full blown and state sponsored genocide as puppies getting killed. “I have not invited PM Narendra Modi as Muslims have not forgiven himfor the Gujart riots. Modi has not shown any guilt for the Gujarat 2002 riots.”[4]
If it were only thus far it would not have been so out of the way. But Modi has shown greater care for the Sikh by enhancing the amount of compensation being paid to the families of Sikhs killed in 1984 massacre, 5 lakh for each Sikh killed in addition to three lakh and fifty thousand that the previous Congress government under Dr Manmohan Singh had done. In his own state he paid Muslims killed in the pogroms one lakh rupees and for Hindus two lakhs. Many Muslims did not get anything. Though he did not call 1984 killings as genocide but he called the Sikh as our very own while he never showed such intimacy with the Gujarati speaking Muslims of his own state. Dorothy Nussbaum in her book The Clash With has observed that when the Sabarmati Express fire incident took place there was hardly any difference between Hindus and Muslims. Both spoke the same language and what is more the Muslims in Signal Falia let the people collect water from their well to douse the fire. Modi called them criminals. For Sikhs he has this to say: "Our own people were murdered, the attack was not on a particular community but on the entire nation… It was like a dagger pierced through India's chest. [ 5]
Syed Ahmad Bukhari cannot be speaking on behalf of all the Muslims when he said that the Muslims have not forgiven Modi and that “he may have been elected the PM but the Muslims of India do not accept him.”[6] Despite this Modi’s “our own people” in the case of Sikhs and ‘puppies’ (Muslims) is burnt into the flesh of Muslims as a mark of spite of the PM for the Muslims. So his strategy to chase Mamta Banerjee government in the case of Burdwan is understandable since the PM has maintained hunting with the hounds and playing with the hare tactics as he said in a blue moon that the Muslims were born here and would die here. That is enough of eyewash!
Checkmating Mamta or enhancing compensation to Sikhs cannot hide the truth that the massacre of 2002 in Gujarat was genocide as was 1984 pogroms against Sikhs. To focus on Sikhs is to eclipse much nearer in time the holocaust in Gujarat. As the 25th anniversary of Bhagalpur massacre also is in news it is pertinent to know that it was genocidal for only Muslims were killed or maimed. There was no Hindu casualty or loss of property. West Bengal and Assam are in the news because of the pre-election 2014 carnage in Assam and the intelligence generated that Al Qaida will target Assam but the undercurrent is that concentration of Muslims will lead to further division. Modi celebrated Sardar Patel birth anniversary by sidelining the assassination of Indira Gandhi because it was Patel who prevented a Muslim state taking shape in Hyderabad princely state where tens of thousands of Muslims were killed to achieve just that. What the Provincial Armed Constabulary did in Hashimpura or what the mobs did in Bhagalpur was replay of history of September-October 1948: "At a number of places members of the armed forces [ during the police action in Hyderabad] brought out Muslim adult males from villages and towns and massacred them in cold blood."According to the Sunderlal report 40, 000 Muslims were butchered.[7] Modi imitated Patel in 2002 where he purportedly finished once for all the equation between Muslims and Hindus in the time of communal riots by letting the police abstain from taking action so that maximum massacre would take place three days that would break the back of Muslims once for all. Not less than 3000 Muslims lost their lives on account of the procrustean injunction.
